Some CD–ROM drives require the proper software drivers to be loaded, and the following test procedure is for those units. However, other drives will give incorrect results if tested with MicroScope under the Windows OS, and should be run under Micro-Scope’s OS just like the other tests.
Once your computer has rebooted, you’ll see the Windows main screen. Insert the Micro-Scope program diskette into floppy Drive A: then do the following steps to test your CD-ROM drive.
1. Click START the lower left of your Windows screen.
2. Click RUN on the pop-up menu.
3. In the Run dialog box, type "A:\MS" then click OK.
4. Micro-Scope will then start up, analyze your system, then will display the Micro-Scope main menu in a window on your screen.
5. Place the mouse arrow on the maximize window icon (see illustration to the right) and click your left mouse button.
6. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to DIAGNOSTICS on the Micro-Scope menu bar and press ENTER.
7. Select "SCSI Device Tests" on the Diagnostics menu and press ENTER. Then choose either SCSI/ASPI or IDE/ATAPI, depending on which type of CD you have.
8. On the next pull-down menu, select DRIVE SELECT.
9. If the drive is a SCSI drive, you must enter the number of the drive, between 0 and 15. If it’s IDE, it will be a Primary Master or Slave, or a Secondary Master or Slave. When your selection is made, press ENTER.
10. Then select READ TEST and press ENTER.
11. In the READ pull-down menu, select READ PARTIAL. (A full read test could take a long time). Press ENTER.
a) Use the arrow key to move down to START SECTOR. The number showing there should be 16. If it is not, type in the number "16."
b) Select END SECTOR and type in the number "2000."
12. Micro-Scope will perform a rapid read test on your CD-ROM drive. When it is completed, you may use the ESCAPE key to exit to Micro-Scope’s main menu, then QUIT to EXIT TO OS. Remove the program diskette from your Drive A and reboot your system.
