Micro-Scope e-book

Floppy Drive and Disk Errors

1. Press ESCAPE again to return to the DIAGNOSTICS pull-down menu. Use the arrow keys to select FLOPPY TESTS and press ENTER. Two windows will open:

a) Highlight SELECT DRIVE and press ENTER.

b) Select DRIVE 0 and press ENTER.

c) Remove the Micro-Scope CD and insert a blank floppy diskette into the A: drive.

d) Use the arrow keys to select BUTTERFLY SEEK TEST and press ENTER. Micro-Scope will perform this special test that reads the disk from the outside in and then inside out (like a butterfly’s wings) and will tell you when the test is completed.

Note: If you get a message stating "Address Mark Not Found", don’t be alarmed,

it just means your floppy diskette is not DOS formatted.

e) Press ESCAPE to return to the pull-down menu.

f) Now select WRITE TEST, press ENTER, and then select ENTIRE DRIVE.

g) You’ll see a red warning message that all data on the floppy diskette is about to be destroyed. The warning message will ask if you want to continue. Press Y. Micro-Scope will perform the write test, and will tell you if there is anything physically wrong with your diskette or floppy drive.

h) When the test is completed, press ESCAPE. Your floppy drive write test is now complete. Press ESCAPE to return to the DIAGNOSTICS pull-down menu.

i) Remove the floppy diskette from the A: drive.

2. On the DIAGNOSTICS pull-down menu, use the arrow keys to select FIXED DISK TESTS and press ENTER. Two windows will open.

a) Highlight SELECT DRIVE and press ENTER.

b) Select DRIVE 0 and press ENTER.

c) Use the arrow keys to select BUTTERFLY SEEK TEST and press ENTER. Micro-Scope will perform this test as it did with the floppy drive. You’ll notice that the test runs much faster on the hard drive than it did on the floppy.

d) When Micro-Scope tells you that the test is completed, press ESCAPE to return to the pull-down menu.

e) Now select WRITE TEST, press ENTER and then select PARTIAL DRIVE. A small box will open asking for START CYLINDER and END CYLINDER. Enter a high number, such as one hundred cylinders less than the high cylinder number already entered in the end cylinder box. You’ll see a red warning message that all data is about to be destroyed. The warning message will ask if you want to continue. Press Y as there is no data yet on your hard drive to be destroyed. Micro-Scope will perform the write test, and will tell you if there is anything physically wrong with your Fixed Disk Drive.

f) When the test is completed, press ESCAPE. Your Fixed Disk Drive write test is now complete. Press ESCAPE until you return to the DIAGNOSTICS pull-down menu.
