Running Micro-Scope to Diagnose a Problem

When you boot up your computer for the first time, perform the following steps to make sure that your CMOS is properly set up before running Micro-Scope.

1. Turn the machine on.

2. Enter the SETUP Utility. This is done by pressing DELETE (or sometimes Esc or F2, depending on your system) while the machine is booting up.

Note: You must press the DELETE key within a few seconds of the system starting its boot-up procedure. You’ll then see the "CMOS Setup Utility" menu.

3. Follow your motherboard manual’s BIOS setup guide to fill in the information that CMOS Setup will require, then follow the procedures on your monitor’s screen. The following notes will help you select the proper settings.

a) Enter the current time and date.

b) You will see settings for PRIMARY MASTER on the CMOS utility screen.

This refers to your hard disk drive. Use the arrow keys and either the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys or the + and – keys to select AUTO for hard disk type.

c) You will see a setting called MODE. Also set this for AUTO. Leave all other disk types as NONE.

d) Set floppy Drive A as 1.44 Megabyte 3.5 inch. Set floppy Drive B as NONE. Set FLOPPY 3 MODE SUPPORT as DISABLED.

e) Refer to the manual that came with your monitor to set the monitor type. Generally this will be set as follows:

VIDEO = EGA/VGA.

f) Set HALT ON = ALL ERRORS.

Press ESCAPE to return to the SETUP menu.

4. Select LOAD BIOS DEFAULTS.

5. What appears at this step will vary from one setup program to the next, but in most cases you will accept the defaults. When completed, press whatever key the CMOS setup screen lists to SAVE and EXIT.

6. Your machine will now continue booting until you see this message displayed at the bottom of your screen: "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER."

Don’t panic! All this means is that there is no operating system in place yet, so the computer has nothing with which to finish booting. You’re now ready to run Micro-Scope.

7. Insert the Micro-Scope disk into Drive A, press ENTER. You’ll see the following on your screen:

Boot Selection Menu

Press <0> to load Base Memory Tests

Press <1> to load Diagnostic Tests

8. Press 1 to load the Diagnostics program, ignoring the BASE MEMORY TESTS, which are only used if you can’t get your system to boot with Micro-Scope.

9. When Micro-Scope finishes loading, you’ll see the Micro-Scope Universal Diagnostics Main Menu (If this is your initial use, you will first have to register by entering your name. You’re now ready to optimize your system with Micro-Scope Diagnostics. Leave the diskette in the drive.

10. Use the left-right arrow keys to highlight SYSTEM CONFIGURATION and press ENTER. Then use the up-down arrow keys to select COMPARE SETTINGS and press ENTER again. Check the information box. There should be no asterisks (*) next to any of the displayed information.

11. Press ESCAPE to return to the pull down menu and use the arrow keys to select SYSTEM INFORMATION. Press ENTER. This will display your system information. Verify the following:

12. Make sure that the settings listed on the screen match the information given in your hardware manuals. Most likely, the only thing that might not match will be CPU (processor) speed.

This should handle any problems, should they arise. Then re-run Micro-Scope as outlined above.
